Verse |

1 إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ When the event befalleth. |
2 لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ There is no denying that it will befall |
3 خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
Abasing (some), exalting (others); |
4 إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجّاً When the earth is shaken with a shock |
5 وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسّاً And the hills are ground to powder |
6
فَكَانَتْ هَبَاء مُّنبَثّاً So that they become a scattered dust, |
7 وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَاجاً ثَلَاثَةً And ye will be three kinds: |
8 فَأَصْحَابُ
الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? |
9 وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ
الْمَشْأَمَةِ And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand? |
10 وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: |
11 أُوْلَئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ Those are they who will be brought nigh |
12
فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ In gardens of delight; |
13 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ A multitude of those of old |
14 وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ
And a few of those of later time |
15 عَلَى سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ On lined couches, |
16 مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ Reclining therein face to face. |
17 يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ There wait on them immortal youths |
18 بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring |
19 لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, |
20 وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
And fruit that they prefer |
21 وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ And flesh of fowls that they desire |
22 وَحُورٌ عِينٌ And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, |
23 كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ
الْمَكْنُونِ Like unto hidden pearls, |
24 جَزَاء بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ Reward for what they used do. |
25 لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْواً وَلَا
تَأْثِيماً There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination |
26 إِلَّا قِيلاً سَلَاماً سَلَاماً (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. |
27 وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ
الْيَمِينِ And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? |
28 فِي سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ Among thornless lote tree |
29 وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ And clustered plantains, |
30 وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ
And spreading shade, |
31 وَمَاء مَّسْكُوبٍ And water gushing, |
32 وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ And fruit in plenary |
33 لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا
مَمْنُوعَةٍ Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, |
34 وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ And raised couches, |
35 إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنشَاء Lo! We have created them a (new) creation |
36 فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ
أَبْكَاراً And made them virgins |
37 عُرُباً أَتْرَاباً Lovers, friends, |
38 لِّأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ For those on the right hand; |
39 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ
الْأَوَّلِينَ A multitude of those of old |
40 وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ And a multitude of those of later time. |
41 وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ
الشِّمَالِ And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? |
42 فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ In scorching wind and scalding water |
43 وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ And shadow of black smoke, |
44 لَّا بَارِدٍ
وَلَا كَرِيمٍ Neither cool nor refreshing. |
45 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury |
46 وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ
عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ And used to persist in the awful sin. |
47 وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَاباً
وَعِظَاماً أَئِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ And they used to say: When we are dead and have come dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, |
48 أَوَ آبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ And also our forefathers? |
49 قُلْ إِنَّ
الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time |
50 لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَى مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. |
51 ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, |
52 لَآكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum |

فَمَالِؤُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ And will fill your bellies therewith; |
54 فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, |
55 فَشَارِبُونَ
شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ Drinking even as the camel drinketh. |
56 هَذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment |
57 نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا
تُصَدِّقُونَ We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? |
58 أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ Have ye seen that which ye emit? |
59 أَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ
الْخَالِقُونَ Do ye create it or are We the creator? |
60 نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, |
